There is nothing quite like a crisp, bright September day for a North East Wedding, and Kathryn and David’s big day at the newly refurbished Whitworth Hall Estate in County Durham was an absolute belter.

As a Whitworth Hall Wedding Photographer, returning there after its stunning makeover was a massive treat. From the elegant, historic country house interiors to the famous resident deer roaming the grounds, it provided the perfect setting for a completely relaxed and joyful celebration.

Kathryn and David wanted a day that was big on atmosphere, short on awkward posing, and absolutely packed with fun and laughter—and they completely smashed it.

Morning Prep & Historic Elegance

The day began right in the heart of the action, capturing the morning preparations at the hall. Kathryn and her bridal party were in high spirits, with the talented team from The Beauty Bom on makeup duty and Waves & Veil crafting gorgeous hair styles. These early hours are always some of my absolute favorites to document. I keep things totally discreet and unobtrusive, focusing on the real moments—the laughs over champagne, the nervous glances, and the total transformation as Kathryn slipped into her breathtaking gown from Y.A.P Bridal.

Meanwhile, David was busy greeting arriving guests downstairs, looking sharp and getting ready for the main event.

A Ceremony Packed with Emotion (and Strings)

The ceremony room looked flawless, enhanced by the stunning floral arrangements designed by Low Fell Florists. As guests took their seats, the atmosphere was elevated by the beautiful, sweeping sounds of the Aurora Strings quartet.

When Kathryn made her way down the aisle, the look on David’s face said it all. My approach to the ceremony is always about capturing those genuine, lightning-bolt connections—the shared smiles, the emotional glances, and the collective sigh of relief when the official vows are sealed. It was a beautiful service, filled with laughter and a few happy tears, before the new Mr. and Mrs. walked out into a storm of confetti.

Relaxed Portraits with the Whitworth Hall Deer

Following the ceremony, guests moved outside to enjoy drinks in the late September sunshine while being entertained by the fantastic John Gatenby Music.

While everyone was catching up and enjoying the buzz, I took Kathryn and David away for a quick 10 to 15-minute stroll around the estate grounds. I never do stiff, forced posing or make you feel awkward. Instead, it’s just a bit of breathing space for the two of you to laugh, chat, and take in the fact that you’re actually married while I capture the natural chemistry between you. The manicured lawns, historic architecture, and the iconic Whitworth Hall deer park gave us a spectacular backdrop that made the couple portraits completely effortless.

Alongside the photography, we also captured Kathryn and David’s day through a cinematic wedding highlight film. Having video completely elevates how you remember your day—it catches the exact quiver in the voice during the vows, the laughter during the speeches, and the incredible energy of the dance floor in a way that stills alone can’t.

Because I look after both the photography and film with the same relaxed, unobtrusive approach, it meant I was able to blend into the background, letting the real narrative of the day unfold naturally. The resulting film is a beautiful, cinematic keepsake that brings every single emotion of their September day right back to life.
