The History of Horton Grange Country House

Horton Grange Country House, situated in the serene locale of Ponteland, Tyne and Wear, boasts a robust history that dates back to the 19th century. Before it became a renowned wedding venue, it served as a private residence named after the ancient English term “Horton” meaning “dirty farmstead”. The grange was initially part of Lillyburn, a massive estates belonging to the Fenwick family until 1659. In 1879, the plot where the Grange stands was procured by William Cochran Carr-Ellison who commissioned France & Armstrong, the celebrated architects of that era to build a family house. The Grade II listed building was architecturally designed in a flamboyant fashion typical of the Victorian age, demonstrating the elegance and ornate style of Victorian architecture.

After several generations, the Carr-Ellison family sold the property and it began a new life as a country club in the 1960s. A substantial extension was later added in 1989, allowing for more space and facilities. Today, the Horton Grange Country House offers a unique balance of the traditional charm and modern sophistication, making it a coveted wedding venue. It provides a tranquil and romantic setting for nuptials, in the heart of Northumberland, while the elegant interior brimming with original features recalls the grandeur of its rich history. The Horton Grange has evolved over the centuries, yet it beautifully preserves its historical essence while delivering both premium service and luxury for special occasions.
