The History of Crathorne Hall
Crathorne Hall, nestled in Yarm, North Yorkshire, is steeped in unparalleled history and heritage. Sir William Henry Hargrove was the original architect of the magnificent edifice in 1906, designing it as a grand Edwardian country house. The house was purchased soon after by Sir Robert Edward Ropner, a British shipbuilder, merchant and Conservative Party politician who was notable for serving as High Sheriff of Durham. With a lavish interior and stately exterior, the hall was sustained by the Ropner family for several decades.
The iconic mansion has withstood the test of time, enduring two world wars. After the Second World War, it was leased and used as a further education college, and it was in this period, the property’s time-honoured charm started attracting interest from couples seeking wedding venues. Recognizing the potential, the house was purchased by Hand Picked Hotels Group in 2004 and officially redefined as Crathorne Hall, an exclusive wedding venue. The building maintains the grandeur of the Edwardian architecture, offering unparalleled opulence and elegance.
However, in 2014, the venue suffered a significant blow as a colossal fire caused damage to the east wing of the building. It took over a year to restore the building to its former glory, painstakingly preserving its historical features. Today, Crathorne Hall stands renewed, continuing to enchant visitors, and serving as a fairytale venue for weddings.
